John was born on June 23rd, 1877 in Iredale, near Helidon, Queensland.  John's father was John O'Brien and his mother was Catherine "Kate" O'Doherty.  His paternal grandparents are James O'Brien and Bridget Ryan; his maternal grandparents are Martin O'Doherty and Mary Frawley.  He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Patrick¹, Daniel, Patrick², Mary Ann, Margaret Mary, James, Katherine, Cornelius, Bridget Mary and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 68 on August 31st, 1945 in Brisbane, Queensland.  His burial was in Helidon Catholic Cemetery, Queensland.
