Emily was born in 1896.  Emily's father was Richard Horrobin and her mother was Alice Averill.  She had five brothers and five sisters, named John William, Joseph, Richard, Charles, Thomas Arthur, Mary Lizzie, Alice Selina, Louisa, Jimima and Jane.  She is the sixth oldest of the eleven children.
