Petronella was born on July 19th, 1852 in Nijmegen.  Petronella's father was Aalbert van Dormolen and her mother was Maria Leemans.  Her paternal grandparents were Antonius van Dormalen and Peternella Albers. She had a brother named Antonius Petrus.  She was the older of the two children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Janes, Aalbert, Jan, zoon, Johan Gijsbert Willem, Hendrika Albertina and Jannetje.
