Sprins was born in 1842.  Sprins' father was Nehemias Jacobson and his mother was Maranne van Hofstede.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Salomo Jacobson and Betje Joseph Stokvis. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Henrie, Salomon, Berend Wolf, Joseph, Asser, Isaac Nehemias, Betje, Jeanette, Dina and Sara.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
