Hendrika was born on May 14th, 1819 in Brummen.  Hendrika's father was Antonius van Dormalen and her mother was Peternella Albers.  Her paternal grandparents were Jan Toons van Doremalen and Elsken Harms. She had two brothers and a sister, named Aalbert, Frerik and Elske.  She was the oldest of the four children. She had two half-brothers named Johannes and Berend.
