Stuart was born on October 24th, 1944. Stuart's father was Les Evans and his mother was Jean Lumsden. His maternal grandparents were John Lawson Lumsden and Wilhelmina Blair Ferguson. He had a brother. He was the older of the two children. He died from cancer at the age of 59 on April 29th, 2004.

- Diagnosed with T-prolymphocytic leukaemia in Feb 2003. Underwent stem cell transplant (stanford protocol) at Peter McCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne, Feb 2004.
