István was born on May 2nd, 1833 in Maniga.1   His godfather was Bajza István and his godmother was Schramek Anna. István's father was Matovics Pál and his mother was Paczelt Mária.  His maternal grandparents were Paczelt György and Tircz Mária. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named József, Mihály, Mária, Katalin, Anna, Ilona, Magdolna, Magdolna and Terézia.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
