William was born in 1815 in Chilcompton, Somerset.  William's father was John Robbins and his mother was Betsy Brice. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Elisha, Samuel Thomas, Walter, John, Martha Brice and Jane.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
