Margaret was born on April 15th, 1867 in Hobart,Tasmania, Australia.  Margaret's father was Lt Gen James Gathorne Cookson and her mother was Julia Augusta Pattle Impey.  Her paternal grandparents were George Cookson and Margaret Remington; her maternal grandparents were HASTINGS  BROUGHTON Impey and AUGUSTA Pattle. She had eight brothers and five sisters, named Hastings, Gathorne, Percy Selby, Samuel, Hugh, John Gwynne, Douglas MacGrigor, Stewart MacDonald, Fanny, Mabel Emily, Grace Helen, Jessie Maud or Mary and Rhoda.  She was the third oldest of the fourteen children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named George Francis, James Gathorne, William, Eliza Margaret and Georgina Augusta.
