Eliza was born about March 1885 in Taunton, Somerset, England.  Eliza's father was Thomas Adams and her mother was Thurza Hutchings.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Adams and Mary Ann Bridge. She had six sisters named Louisa, Lily, Maud, Alice Matilda, Nellie and May.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
