Joan was born in 1781 in Bridport, Dorset, England.  Joan's father was Lawrence Ackerman and her mother was Sarah Denziloe. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Edward, Abraham, Henry, Jane, Dinah and Sarah.  She was the youngest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 59 in 1840.
