Dilip's father was Karamchand Govind Solanki and his mother was Kamla Otamchand Gohil.  His paternal grandparents were Govind Geraj Solanki and Nanibai Bhavan Waghela; his maternal grandparents are Otamchand Jeraj Gohil and Harakh. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Javaharlal, Dipak, Madan, Kusumkumari, Bhagvati, Prabhavati and Tarulata.  He is the fifth oldest of the eight children.
