Gilbert was born on April 30th, 1761 in Cheshire.1   Gilbert's father was Mr Thomas Curtis and his mother was Mrs Esther Benham.  His paternal grandparents were Mr Thomas Curtis and Mrs Mary; his maternal grandparents were Mr Joseph Benham III and Mrs Hope Cook. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Lydia, Esther and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the five children.1
