Catherine was born in 1852 in Wittersham, Kent.  Catherine's father was Thomas Slingsby and her mother was Hannah Baker. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Alfred, Caroline and Emily.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
