John James was born on November 27th, 1815.  John James' father was John Smith Barlow and his mother was Sarah Wrigley.  His paternal grandfather is John Barlow and his paternal grandmother was Betty Smith; his maternal grandparents were James Wrigley and Elizabeth Kenworthy. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, William Henry, Elizabeth and Sarah Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
