He is friends with Draco Malfoy, generally following him around and doing his bidding. He seems to lack all intelligence, magical talent, and independent thought, and thus uses only his size and strength to bully other students or scare off anyone who threatens Malfoy. Malfoy has indicated that Goyle cannot read. Goyle's father is a Death Eater.
