Thomas was born in 1796 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex and his baptism took place there on November 6th, 1796.  Thomas' father was Henry and his mother was Tabitha Batchelor.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Gander and Elizabeth Harland; his maternal grandparents were Richard  Batchelor and Ann Penfold. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Henry, William, Francis, Elizabeth, Jane and Ann.  He died at the age of 96 in 1892.
