  • My father joined the Jewish Legion during WWI. My father z"l told me that he was working in a shipyard when a recruiter told the Jewish men that they could join the British Jewish Legion, assisting the overthrow of the Ottoman rule of Palestine with the promise of creating a Jewish homeland. My father joined and trained in Nova Scotia. While he was on the ship heading to Eretz Yisrael, the Ottomans were toppled. He never was in a battle. He served at an Army base, where he met Aaron Greenglass,(a civilian employee) who invited my Dad to his home for Shabbat. That's how he met my mother, who was living with the Greenglass family in Tel Aviv.  They became engaged in Eretz Yisrael. My father returned to the U.S. He sent for her later. I will have to search for the date they married. I know they were married in the shul where Yossi Rosenblatt was the chazan and that he sang at their wedding.
