  • This family are very hard to sort out, see the various notes under each family member and this note.
    It is possible that there is another Cyrus Smith but in the 1851 census there are only 10 Cyrus Smiths and only one of them is born out of county and living in Bethnal Green. It may be that I have picked the wrong one, but I can't find a likely secord one. Of the 10, 7 are too young to have reasonably married in 1840 and of the remaining 3 two are married (Nancy and Mary) leaving only the one born 1820 in Cambridge and living with his sister's family in Bethnal Green. Cyrus and Betty are not together in any census after 1841 so identification of the family is difficult but assuming that this is the right Cyrus Smith this is what I think happened.
    Betty married Cyrus Smith in 1840. They had Martha in 1840 who does not seem to have survived, not shown in 1851. Jane in 1843 who also may not have survived but is in the 1851 census, there is a second Jane born in 1851 which is a problem unless Jane 1 died in the same year as Jane 2 was born. They then have another Martha in 1844 who also seems to disappear by 1861. Then there is a Sarah in 1845 who also disappears by 1861. Then Betsey in 1848 who is in the 1861 census but whose age is 10, 2 years younger but for now I have assumed that it is her, she is not in the 1871 census but may by then have married. Then there is Jane in 1851 see note about the first Jane, but by 1861 this Jane has also disappeared. Then William in 1854 who is with Cyrus up to age 18 in the 1871 census.  Then possibly Cyrus between 1854 and 1858 when he dies just after Betty, possibly child birth complications?
    It is possible that the missing daughters are 'in service' i.e. servants somewhere but finding Smiths in any census is difficult, fortunately Cyrus has an unusual name and was born in Cambridge which make him easier to find.
    I am not going to buy certificates for all of this lot so someone more closely related to them may like to try to really establish what the real situation is.
