Susannah was born about December 1834 in Bethnal Green and her christening took place on December 23rd, 1834 at St Leonards Shoreditch Middlesex.1  Susannah's father was William (twine spinner) Spelman and her mother was Charlotte Nichols.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman  and Mary Foster. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Henry, Robert , Joseph, Emma, Victoria, Charlotte and Rose.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.

Susannah and Thomas were married in a religious ceremony on October 3rd, 1859 at St Matthews Bethnal Green.
