Joseph was born in 1838 in New John St Bethnal Green. Joseph's father was William (twine spinner) Spelman and his mother was Charlotte Nichols.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman  and Mary Foster. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Henry, Robert , Susannah, Emma, Victoria, Charlotte and Rose.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.

Joseph and Hannah were married in a religious ceremony on June 1st, 1857 at St James the Great Bethnal Green Middlesex England by Vicar Edward J Coke and witnessed by William & Grace Richrdson.  They had four sons and three daughters, named Joseph, James, Thomas, Henry, Elizabeth, Grace and Emma.
