Joseph was born in September 1839 in Barking Essex.1  Joseph's father was William James Pollard (Fisherman) and his mother was Hephzibah Ashton (of Ilford).  His paternal grandparents were James Pollard (net maker Fisherman) and Jane Malpas; his maternal grandparents are Ashton and <Unknown>. He had two sisters named Hephzibah and Clara.  He was the oldest of the three children.
