Clara was born in 1849 in Barking Essex.1   Clara's father was William James Pollard (Fisherman) and her mother was Hephzibah Ashton (of Ilford).  Her paternal grandparents were James Pollard (net maker Fisherman) and Jane Malpas; her maternal grandparents are Ashton and <Unknown>. She had a brother and a sister, named Joseph and Hephzibah.  She was the youngest of the three children.
