Sarah was born in 1822 in Chalfont St Peters Bucks.  Sarah's father was Joseph (Farmer/Publican) Payne and her mother was Ann. She had five brothers and four sisters, named William, Charles, John, Thomas, Richard, Margaret, Rhoda, Ann and Eliza.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
