James was born on February 2nd, 1854 in Paddington.  James' father was William (of Chalfont St Peters) Payne (Porter/ Drayman) and his mother was Margaret Weedon.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph (Farmer/Publican) Payne and Ann; his maternal grandparents are James      (a Joiner)  Weedon and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, William, Charles, Margaret, Richard, Mary, Margaret and Rhoda.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
