Thomas was born about 1811 in Barking Essex.  Thomas' father was Thomas Patch (Fisherman) and his mother was Mary (widow Williams). He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Mary and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
