Matilda was born in 1853 in Sudbury Suffolk.  Matilda's father was Samuel Parish (Bricklayer) and her mother was Susannah Crisell (Hand Loom Weaver Silk b Gt Cornard).  Her maternal grandparents were Robert  Crisell (Silk Weaver b Sudbury) and Mary A (b Newton Suffolk). She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Alexander, Henry, Benjamin, Robert, Charles and Martha.
