Mary was born about 1840 at Park Terrace Fisher St Barking and her christening took place on August 24th, 1841 at St Margaret's  Church Barking.1 2   Mary's father was John of Braintree East (Fisherman) and her mother was Rachael Rebecca Gerrad.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas East (Carpenter) and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Garrad (shoemaker) and <Unknown>. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Alfred, Thomas, Alfred, Rachael, Angelina, Alice and Emily.  She was the oldest of the nine children.

Mary and Thomas were married in a religious ceremony on November 24th, 1866 at St Mary Magdalene East Ham witnessed by Charless Bull & Sarah Moore. They had six sons and a daughter, named Thomas, Albert, William, Alfred, Ernest, Arthur and Edith.
