Tevye was born in 1904 in Rezekne.  Tevye's father was Mowscha Shusterman and his mother was Haya Frida Shusterman.  His paternal grandparents were Jankel Shusterman and Pesa Shusterman; his maternal grandparents were Leiba Sapir and Roche Lea Sapir. He had a brother and six sisters, named Lev, Pesya(Polya), Genya, Sonya, Berta, Tzilya and Ida.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
