Lev was born in 1894 in Rezekne.  Lev's father was Mowscha Shusterman and his mother was Haya Frida Shusterman.  His paternal grandparents were Jankel Shusterman and Pesa Shusterman; his maternal grandparents were Leiba Sapir and Roche Lea Sapir. He had a brother and six sisters, named Tevye, Pesya(Polya), Genya, Sonya, Berta, Tzilya and Ida.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 43 in 1937.
