Riva was born on April 24th, 1919 in Rezekne.  Riva's father was Mark Heidenreich and her mother was Zina Heidenreich.  Her paternal grandparents were Shabsi Heidenreich and Sara Faiga Heidenreich; her maternal grandparents were Ilya Sapir and Rachel Sapir. She had a brother and two sisters, named Sima, Sonya and Roza.  She was the oldest of the four children.  She died in the Holocaust at the age of 22 in 1941 in Latvia.
