Berta was born in 1906 in Rezekne.  Berta's father was Mowscha Shusterman and her mother was Haya Frida Shusterman.  Her paternal grandparents were Jankel Shusterman and Pesa Shusterman; her maternal grandparents were Leiba Sapir and Roche Lea Sapir. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Lev, Tevye, Pesya(Polya), Genya, Sonya, Tzilya and Ida.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.  She died in Samara.
