Thomas was born in 1787 in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire.  Thomas' father was Robert Howatson and his mother was Isabella Laidlaw.  His paternal grandparents were William Howatson and Mary Anderson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William, George, Robert, Mary, Christina, Margaret and Isabella.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 79 in 1866 in Anstruther, Fife.
