Isabella was born in 1794.  Isabella's father was Robert Howatson and her mother was Isabella Laidlaw.  Her paternal grandparents were William Howatson and Mary Anderson. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, William, George, Thomas, Robert, Mary, Christina and Margaret.  She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
