John Henry KABLE

John Henry was born on November 12th, 1802 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. John Henry's father was HENRY KABLE and his mother was Susannah HOLMES. His paternal grandparents were Henry Keable and Diana FULLER; his maternal grandparents are Joshua HOLMES and Eunice Brooks. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Enoch, James, George Esto, William Nathanial, Charles Dickenson, Edgar James, Diana, Susannah and Eunice. He was the nineth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 56 on May 30th, 1859 in Bairaba Hotel, Windsor, NSW, Australia. His burial was on May 31st, 1859.

General Notes
- Living at Windsor at the time of Emmelines marriage Living at Portlands Head at the birth of their daughter Eliza in 1826 and Susan in 1831. John became Australia`s lst boxing champion in 1824, other family prizefighters were EdgarJames Kable, Joe Teale and George Gaudry. On the Tuesday after Christmas, Eliza the wife of neighbour to the Aspery family John Kable, sware out a summons charging Eleanor with assault and "Bull Rescue". The Aspery bull had strayed on to the Kable farm causing damage to crops, and an assigned servant hadbeen directed to impound it. From Eliza`s deposition it would seem that she had the right to demand a fee from Eleanor for its retrieval as they lived more than 10 miles from the official pound. Mrs. Kable had no intention of allowing her servant, in the spirit of Christmas to return the offending animalto its owner with perhaps a stern warning. What followed was a confrontation between the 2 ladies which ended again in the Windsor Courthouse. Mrs. Kable`s reluctance to state for the record Eleanor`s exact words was noted by the clerk in the following extract from the jury trial which took place in February1836; "..the said Eleanor Byrne put her fist against my face, and pushed myhead against the fence. She spat in my face and called me a ...(word crossed out) made use of violent language..."Eleanor had been bailed to appear, and her father and Thomas had each lodged the sum of 5 pounds, and Eleanor herself double that amount. John Locke, the accuser`s assigned servant gave evidence that the fruits of victory had been Eleanor`s but becoming so involvedin the scene, he was unsure as to whether the children had been responsiblefor the bull rescue, while the ladies were involved in combat. The accused`s only defence was denial on the grounds that she had heard in the backgroundthe earnest plea from Mr. Kable: "let her take it Let her take it" But the jury was satisfied that the offence had been proved, and the "Bull Temptress"was fined 40 shillings on the finding that she did "..lead and drive away (the bull) to the great damage to the said John Kable, against the peace of our Sovereign Lord and King,. and against the act of the Governor..."That the Court had som sympathy with the defendent is made evident by a penceilled noteon the case papers recommending the establishment of a common pound in the area. Ref;- AONSW; Windsor Quarter Sessions, 1836 4/8489, No 18. John was found dead in the loft at the rear of the Bairaba Hotel Windsor at 7 A.M. Coroners Report. He was a big man. Died apprently from intemperence. This Hotelwas burnt down in 1847 and replaced by the Royal Exchange. In an artical fromthe Hawkesbury Independent March 1995 States that a John Kable was robbed by a group of Irish convicts at Richmond Hill (the present site of St. John ofGod) in March 1803 this could not be correnct as John was only born in 1802 mayby it was his father? Supreme court of NSW 1824 John Cable was next indicted for a rape on the person of Martha harris, amarried woman living in the town of Windsor, on the 1st of May. The prosecutirix, by her own tewstimony, had been most brutally treated by the prisoner; but as the evidence, in the earliest stage of the trial, proved incomplete as to the establishment of the capital felony, with which the information charged the prisoner, he was acquitted. The same prisoner was then arraigned for the misdeamoner, which went to charge him with the gross and violent assault upon the person of Martha harris with an intention to commit a rape. The prisoner was found guilty. On the 3.6.1824 Cable was directed to pay a fine of 20 pounds to be imprisoned 14days and then to enter into sureties to keep the peace for 12 months.
