    from researcher Carol Zell, 10/06:
    [...] one of my "White" researcher cousins was at the Indiana State Library and found a baptismal entry for May 10, 1849 from St. Simon Church (in Washington, IN). It stated that the Rev. John McDermott had baptized Harriet Edwards, whose parents are not Catholics, according to the rites of the Catholic Church.  I believe this could be my Harriet Edwards. In the 1850 census she was living with Zachariah and Louisa Walker. They were both Catholics, so they may have influenced Harriet to become a Catholic.
    
    After completing his term in the state assembly, Zachariah teamed up with John Mattingly and put in some work on the second Daviess County courthouse, completed in 1841.  Structural problems included a leaky roof, and the cupola needed repair.  On March  6, 1847, the Board of Commissioners decreed that "whereas it is indispensable that some repairs be made on the Cupola and the roof of the Courthouse, to prevent leaking and preserve the building, it is therefore ordered that Zachariah Walker and John Mattingly be and they are hereby employed to make all such necessary repairs on said roof and Cupola, and to paint the Cupola with two good coats of white paint, and also to raise the Column of the lower room in the said house, and it is further ordered that John B. Coleman be appointed to superintend said repairs, the same to be made previous to the first day of June next, and the said Superintendent is hereby authorized to give said Walker & Mattingly a certificate to the auditor for any sum not exceeding thirty dollars, during the progress of said repairs & etc., in part payment for the same, for the amount of which certificate the auditor is authorized to draw an order or orders on the County Treasury."  This courthouse structure suvived until the 1870s, when a third courthouse was built.

    Zachariah Walker served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives as a member of the 31st General Assembly.  The session started
    December 7, 1846 and ended January 28, 1847.  According to Constitution Making in Indiana by Charles Kettleborough, elections were typically held in August at that time.  I checked John Miller's Indiana Newspaper Bibliography, and unfortunately, it seems that very few newspapers were published in Daviess or Martin Counties during the 1840s, of which almost none are extant.  The Indiana State Library does not have any issues of any Daviess/Martin County newspapers for the time period surrounding
    the likely election date.
    
    The House Journal contains some information about Zachariah Walker's term of service.  He served on two standing committees, the committee on canals and the military service committee.  Votes are recorded in the Journals, but they are not compiled or indexed.  There were more than 100 aye-nays recorded on more than 500 bills, and to compile a voting record would be a larger undertaking than I am able to engage in. 
    
    With respect to finding information about his election, you would do
    best to contact a local historical society or library.  The election
    returns for state representatives and senators are not recorded in the
    Secretary of State's reports for that time.  There might be some
    information held locally, however.  The local historical society may also have some family or local history documents that would be pertinent to your research.
