    Marion Van Tornhout:  Alfons TAELMAN was laid out at Forest G. Hay & Son Funeral Home South Bend, In.  Service was at Sacred Heart Church at 10 A.M. on 9 June 1967.  Burial was at Highland Cemetery.  He was member of Volkskring Lodge.  (...) I did not know all this info at the time back in 1952, when my husband & I with our children lived at Kosciuzsko St. around the corner from the General Shoe Store that they owned on Western Ave.  I had taken our 2 sons there for shoes.  (...) You asked about "The Volkskring Lodge" it is a "Belgian American Club" which means "Peoples Circle".  It ws started in March of 1925 by the leaders of the Club of South Bend for the purpose of fostering the interest of the many persons of Belgian descent in the community by aiding them in times of emergency, and doing everthing possible to make good Americans of them.  In 1945 Edward F. VOORDE was president and in 1959, while Mayor of South Bend, In. he was re-elected for his sixteenth term as president of the organization.  He was the most popular mayor of any mayor of this city.  He was many times called by his nickname of "BABE".  "BABE" was killed in an automobile accident on 2-Sept-1960 about 4 miles south of Plymouth, In. on U.S. Hwy 31.  This is according to the book by Henry A. VERSLYPE called "The Belgians of Indiana"
