There are two SSDI records for a Hyman Strauzer. Based on what we have, either of these could be Mel's father. Perhaps his widow Sandy could clear it up:

This is apparently a match for the first SSDI record above, despite the slight discrepancy on the birth date (the WWI record is clearly December 1). I've attached a digitalized image of the above record. Notice that it gives this Hyman's occupation as "barber," and that he was born in Russian Poland -- looks like a match. Med height, blue eyes, blonde hair. On his citizenship status, he has declared his intention to (can't read), and I believe this means he had not yet completed his petition for U.S. citizenship -- so the naturalization record below may also be a match. He states that his father and mother are dependent on him, so they may also have been in New York. I'll dig a bit more here.

It would be a real boon to find a census record for either Hyman, but I'm really stuck here. No good matches 1900-1930.
