    obituary notice:
    "Paralysis and infirmities incident to old age combined to cause [the] death of Mrs. Mary A. Spalding, eighty-four years old, who passed away at seven-o'clock Friday evening at her home on east Gootee street.  She had been in poor health for some time and had been confined to her bed for several weeks.  She suffers [sic] from [an] attack of paralysis about two weeks ago, and during the last few days of her illness was unable to talk to those in attendance at her bedside.
    
    "The deceased whose name was Pate, was born in Lawrence county, Indiana on December 9, 1831.  She married John B. Spalding, then a young farmer and who became one of the most prominent and influential citizens of eastern Daviess county and at one time served as county treasurer.  Twelve children were born to their union, nine of whom survive.  They are Mrs. Mary (H.) Brown and Simeon Spalding of this city, L. (B.) Spalding of Montgomery, Mrs. James A. Norris and Julian Spauling [sic] of Washington, Mrs. Charles Singleton of Russellville, Indiana, Walter Spalding of San Francisco, Calif., Martin J. Spalding of Indianapolis and Mrs. Lewis Doyle of East St. Louis, Illinois.
    
    "For some years following the death of Mr. Spalding in 1904, Mrs. Spalding continued to reside on their farm in VanBuren [sic] township, but later moved to this city in order to be nearer to church and the family physician.  Mrs. Spalding was one of the most widely known and highly esteemed women of the community, and her passing, though at a ripe old age, brings a feeling of deep grief to her many relatives and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
    
    "The funeral was held yesterday morning with mass at St. John's church at eight o'clock, following which the remains were taken to St. Mary's cemetery, Barr township, for interment."
