The maternal grandparents of Thomas H. Robeson were Thomas and Nancy (Keen) Herndon. Grandfather Herndon was born in Kentucky and was one of the early settlers in Franklin county, Indiana. He died in 1852, his wife having passed away the year previously.

188. The Herndons of the American Revolution
Children of Thomas Herndon and Nancy Keen:
1056 GIDEON HERNDON was born 11 August 1811 in Green County, Ky.    At age 10 he removed with his parents to Franklin County, Indiana. There he
married 20 February 1831 his first cousin Mildred Rafferty (b 2 April
1818; d 19 August 1892), eldest child of James Rafferty and his wife Elizabeth Morris Keen (b 3 March 1787), the latter being sister to Nancy (Keen) Herndon. Gideon Herndon and his brother-in-law John Robeson were joint grantees of land in Franklin County, Indiana, in 1837 from Fred, Jacob, and Adam Fight. Gideon Herndon later made his home in Jackson township, Dearborn
County, Indiana. There he died between 1854 and 1860. In the latter
year Mrs. Elizabeth Rafferty lived with her daughter Mildred Herndon and the
latter's three youngest daughters. Whether there were any other
children and what the names of the husbands of the older daughters were is not known to the compiler:
(1) Sophronia Herndon, b ca 1832.
(2) Ann Herndon, b ca 1834.
(3) Isabella Herndon, b ca 1840.
(4) Martha Herndon, b ca 1842.
(5) Emily Herndon, b ca 1844.
(6) Mary Herndon, b ca 1850.

1057 SOPHRONIA HERNDON, was born 11 August 1813 and died during
her father's lifetime. She m 7 October 1832 JOHN ROBESON (b 2 January 1809 in Kentucky; d 1855), as his second wife, and had issue: 5
(1) Nancy Robeson m in Franklin County Abraham Bossert, served in Union Army; issue.
(2) William Robeson.
(3) Thomas Herndon Robeson, a staunch Democrat and member of the
Christian Church, m 26 September 1861 Rosa A. Schocke (b 25 December 1843), daughter of Louis and Rachel (Flohr) Schocke; had issue, 3 sons and 5 daughters.
(4) Sarah Anna Robeson m in Franklin County, Ind., 17 January 1864
William H. Prifogle, and had issue.

well-to-do resident of Greensburg, Indiana; no issue.

1062 FRANCES HERNDON (b 1825; d March 1859) m 17 August 1843 BENJAMIN MAWHINNEY (1821-1861), lived in Brookville, Indiana, in 1850, and then had:
(1) Franklin Mawhinney (b ca 1845). (2) Milton Mawhinney (b ca 1847).
(3) Missouri Mawhinney (b 1849). They later had a daughter Susan, b ca
1854, who was adopted by her aunt Mrs. Childers. Susan Mawhinney went by the nickname of Molly. She m Stevenson.
1063 CARY JONES HERNDON (b 24 September 1827) m 24 September 1851 SARAH JANE DANT; lived in Sangamon County, Ill., in 1856.
1064 MILTON KEEN HERNDON (b 20 March 1829; d ca 1892) m CLARISSA LYONS (b ca 1847) ; along with Schuyler Colfax, who was later Vice President of the United States, and three other prominent Odd Fellows, he signed the charter
granted 8 January 1850 to Carroll Encampment, No. 22, in Carroll
County, Indiana. Shawnee Encampment, No. 25, IOOF, in Fountain County, Ind., was
organized 6 March 18 51 and was instituted by Milton Keen Herndon,
M.W.R.C.P. He and his wife lived in 1870 in Hammond, Franklin County,
with their two children:
(1) Alice Herndon b 1867. (2) Omar Herndon b 1869. 1065 ARCHER BOHANNON HERNDON (b' 15 March 1832, Blue Creek, Indiana) later lived at Brookville, Franklin County, where he was elected auditor; was later a member of the law firm of Bracken and Herndon and of the Brookville Presbyterian Church. He married in Cincinnati, Ohio, 26 August 1858 ELIZABETH VOGEL who died 12
August 1906. His death occurred New Year's Day 1913.    Issue:
(1) Douglas Steven Herndon (b 26 August 1859, Brookville, Ind.) m there
13 June 1882 Mary Anne Peters; issue.
(2) Anna Herndon (b 19 November 1862, Brookville) m 1882 Emmet Jacobs; issue.
(3) Franklin H. Herndon (b 20 August 1866, Brookville) m 9 April 1890
Anna Schlottermiller; lived at Hamilton, Ohio, furnished all of the details
of his father's family; issue.
(4) Eleanor Herndon (b 19 July 1873, Greensboro, Indiana) m Julius
Helbling; lived at Hamilton, Ohio, where all their children were born. 1066 EMILY HERNDON (b 24 September 1836) m GEORGE PATRICK.

CMB to Jerry Herndon 3/06:
If I'm reading this right, there's a disconnect here: record 1056 for Gideon HERNDON 1811 KY gives his
daughter Sophronia's birth date as "about 1832." This Sophronia is said to have married John ROBESON, but
she is too young. The 1850 census for Jackson, Dearborn includes Gideon HURNDON (sic) 1811 KY,
living with Mildred 1813 KY, Sophia 1832 IN, Ann 1834 IN, Isabella 1841 IN, Martha 1843 IN and Emily 1844
IN. The compiler may have confused this Sophia (1832 IN) with Sophronia 1813 (see below).

In record 1057 for Sophronia HERNDON, her birth date is given as 11 August 1813. This looks like a match for John's wife -- but who are her parents? Gideon 1811 KY is too young to be her father. In the 1850
census for Highland, Franklin, IN, in the household of John ROBESON 1810 KY, the birth year of his wife
Sophronia computes to 1815. That is a close enough match for 1057. (I've rechecked the census record, and Sophronia's age is definitely given as 35.)

Also, your excerpt states that John and Sophronia (HERNDON) ROBESON had "issue: 5" but gives the names
of only four children: Nancy, William, Thomas Herndon and Sarah Anna. Just for your notes if you don't have
it already, the fifth child is apparently John A. L. ROBESON 1851 IN, who is enumerated in 1860 in Highland, Franklin, IN in the household of John
ROBESON and his subsequent wife Ann Catharine (maiden name probably WHITEHEAD).

Sophronia and John's first child, Nancy, may have been named after John's sister Nancy (ROBESON) WISE.

Perhaps of interest, John ROBESON's later wife Ann Catherine appears to be the daughter of John WHITEHEAD
1788 PA, who appears in John/Catharine's household in
Highland, Franklin, IN in 1870. In 1860, this John WHITEHEAD's residence was Jackson Twp in neighboring Dearborn County, IN. As your source states, "Gideon Herndon later made his home in Jackson township, Dearborn County, Indiana. There he died between 1854 and 1860." So John ROBESON may have
met his next wife while keeping up contacts with his in-laws in Jackson, Dearborn -- if his earlier wife Sophronia was indeed a HERNDON.

Jerry Herndon 3/06:
Carleton, as I read the material, the 1st Sophronia (b 1832) is the daughter
of Gideon. The 2nd Sophronia (record 1057) is Gideon's sister. So far we
agree. It was record 1057 that married John Robeson, not the b.1832
Sophronia. What I think has happened here is that my OCR of the
original file loses the indentation sometimes and it's not as clear how people relate.
