    The following letter was found in File Box 328, Lauderdale County Courthouse. Lexington, 25 Mar. 1867.  Judge Benham, Florence, Ala. (courtesy Muriel Barnett)
    
    Dear Sir, " Gideon Barnett, my father- in- law departed this life on 16th Inst. he died intestate, did not leave widow or children.  My children are his heirs, they are minors incompetant to administer.  Thos. N. Williams being the largest creditor and I believe a competant and suitable man to administer.  I therefore  recommend him to your honor, I would also suggest to your honor the prospect of ordering the personal property of said estate sold for cash as I do not believe that there could be a note made that would secure an administration".

    burial note:  tombstone gives death date as Dec. 28, 1858 Aged 28 yrs. Martha and Asa [and brother-in-law James) are buried in the Barnett Cemetery in Lauderdale Co. AL (Muriel Barnett)
    
    Martha appears to have died btwn. 1857 (birth of son David L., who said in later censuses that his mother had been b. TN) and 1860 (does not appear in this or later censuses in Asa Franklin's household).  According to BARNETT family oral history, Asa's wife died in 1859.
    
    1850 US Census (November 1), residing in "2d Div E of the Military Road," Lauderdale County, AL, head of household is Asa F. BARNET (sic), 25 y.o., b. SC, farmer, value of real estate owned 600, living with Martha (20, b. TN) and Mahala (7 mos., b. AL).
