Carlyle's father was Walter Ernest Harding and his mother was Margaret Gray.  His maternal grandparents were William [Camus] Gray and Jane Carson. He had a brother and a sister, named Archie and Audrey.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 22 in 1922.
