Martha's father was Mathew Finlay and her mother was Jane Mathews.  Her paternal grandparents were John [1831,1841-Ballystrone] Finlay and Mary Anne McDougal. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, Mathew, Thomas, Jane, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
