  Source, aged 77 at death in 1879.

John's father was ???? Finlay and his mother was ???? ????. He had two brothers named Samuel and Matthew.  He died at the age of 77 on February 15th, 1879.

• Death Notes

  Derry FHC Civil Deaths record shows a John Finlay, of Ringrashmore, died 02/05/1869, male, married, 77 years, farmer, died of Bronchitis after 6 months, a Peter Finlay of Ringrashmore was PAD and the death was registered in Articlave.  However, a Peter Finlay, from Ringrash, was married to my John Finlay's daughter, Isabella Finlay, so this John may well be Peter's father, and not my John Finlay.
  
  The index to Civil Deaths for the Coleraine District shows a John FinlEy, who died in 1875, aged 77.  Furthermore, the GVRBs show that my John Finlay was scored out in 1875, which fits.  This could be my John Finlay but there are no shortage of Finlays in the Coleraine area so it could equally be someone else.  Turns out it wasn't my John.  SS found the death notice for this man in the Coleraine Chronicle and it says he was from Ballynacannon in Macosquin Parish.  When checked on the Griffiths Valuation, sure enough, the WAS a John Finlay in Ballynacannon so this must have been that John.
  
  Finally found John's obit Coleraine Chronicle Saturday 2/22/1879
  Feb. 15,1879 Finlay at his residence Long Commons Coleraine John (late of Ballystrone, Dunboe) farmer, aged 77.

• General Notes

  Given as the father of Jane Finlay in her marriage record on 11 April 1854 in 1st Dunboe - she of Ballystrone, he a farmer. 
  
  Fermoyle was not formed until 1843.  All of its townlands were in Dunboe when the Tithe Applotment Book was produced there in 1828.  It shows a William and a Robert Finlay sharing a plot in Ballywilderick, a Mathew Finlay, James Finlay and a Widow Finlay holding plots in Ballystroan, no Finlays in Blakes, Ballinrees, Knockmult or Bratwell, and I did not see any John Finlays in any of the townlands but the film was very faint in places.

  which might suggest that my John was married and became head of his own household sometime between 1828 and 1831, which does fit with the birth of my Jane Finlay.  He is living in a household of one male and four females.  It has to be the same man.  This suggests my John might never have had any male children OR, he did have older male children and they had already moved out - and there ARE two Jameses and a Robert also living in Ballystroan OR, if he was younger, his male children had not yet been born in 1831.

  There are only two Finlays in Fermoyle in the Griffiths Valuation, both called John Finlay, one from Ballystrone:
  Plot 2, Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, HOL, 13/3/10, 7/10/0, 0/15/0, 8/5/0,
  and one from Knockmult:
  Plot 7, Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, HOL, 5/1/30, 2/15/0, 0/15/0, 3/10/0

  - he s/o to Sir A A Bruce Bart in 1875

  There are no Finlays in the 1901 census for Ballystrone so obviously, when John died or sold the farm, the family moved on elsewhere.
