Robert was born in 1857. Robert's father was John Cooke and his mother was Elizabeth Bolton. His paternal grandparents were James McCook and Mary Ann McIlhouse; his maternal grandparents were William Bolton and Elizabeth Sloan. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas and Mary.
