Maxwell was born on March 4th, 1841 in Newton-on-Ayr and his baptism took place on April 18th, 1841 in St. Quivox.^1 2

Maxwell's father was John Walkinshaw and his mother was Annie Taylor.  His maternal grandparents were Andrew Taylor and Ann Scoffield. He had four brothers and five sisters, named George, Andrew, Barbara, William, Elizabeth, Ann, Jannet, Helen and Isabella.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 82 in February 1924 in Kent.
