Margaret's father was Alexander Walker and her mother was Isobel Lorn.  Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Walker and Helen Muirhead; her maternal grandparents were William Lorn and Jean Gardner. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named William, Walker, Alexander, George, David, William, William, Agnes and Jean.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
