John was born in 1799 in Falkirk and his baptism took place there on May 12th, 1799.  John's father was Alexander Walker and his mother was Helen Laurence.  His maternal grandparents were John Laurance and <Unknown>. He had a brother and three sisters, named Alexander, Jean, Isabel and Janet.  He was the youngest of the five children.
