William was born on January 17th, 1838 at Paisley Abbey. William's father was William Tours and his mother was Margaret Colquhoun.  His paternal grandparents were William Tours and Janet Fulton. He had a brother and a sister, named Walter and Christina.  He was the oldest of the three children.
