John was born in 1779 in Paisley and his baptism took place on February 28th, 1779 at Paisley Abbey. John's father was Michaill Towrs and his mother was Agnes Stewart. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Michaill, William, Michal, Agnes, Jannet and Mary.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
